GX Dash! A Grade Crossing Database Dashboard Tool

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has provided a number of data tools to assist with the analysis of highway-rail grade crossing collisions (also known as grade crossing of "GX"), deaths and injuries. GX Dash! presents a cohesive and easily digestible snapshot of GX collisions in the United States. This tool is designed to enhance the user’s ability to visualize data over the past 10 years.
GX Dash! is geared toward answering the following core questions around GX collisions over the past 10 years:
- Where have grade crossing collisions happened both nationally and locally?
- What is the trend in grade crossing collisions, injuries, fatalities?
- What is the number of collisions, fatalities, and injuries for a given state and county?
- What data trends exist in the situational details of GX collisions? (Such as type of vehicle, vehicle position, time of day, warning device present, etc.)
- What are some identifiable driver’s actions involved in GX collisions?
After each reported GX collision that occurs, the FRA receives detailed information on the incident from the railroad involved. Statistics on grade crossing collisions can be garnered by aggregating the information recorded in this manner. While GX Dash! provides information over a 10-year period, it is important to note that FRA’s publicly available Safety database contains information that expands over 40 years. The FRA has monitored and analyzed collisions, deaths and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings to mitigate the loss of life and property. While grade crossing accidents have decreased over time, approximately 35 percent of all rail-related deaths and are the second-leading cause of fatalities on the railroad system (behind trespassing fatalities). Safety is the highest priority of the Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration and the FRA continues its commitment to highway-rail crossing collision prevention.
