Compliance Testing for Locomotive LED Headlights and Auxiliary Lights, Phase I
- Federal Railroad Administration
This report describes Phase I compliance testing of light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures as locomotive headlights and auxiliary lights. The purpose was to validate that all LED samples submitted by participating suppliers complied with applicable regulatory requirements and standards, and to compare the photometric features of LED samples to halogen locomotive lights currently used in the rail industry. Luminous intensity and color temperature values were measured for LED and halogen samples. These measurements were obtained by following both the guidelines provided by the Association of American Railroads’ Locomotive Committee – LED Headlight-Auxiliary Light Standard Technical Advisory Group in its scope of work and the standard requirements in 49 Code of Federal Regulations §229.125.
Phase II and Phase III testing will involve subjective field testing for LED sample fixtures on static and moving locomotives, respectively. These test phases will be documented in future reports.
