FRA supported Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech), in collaboration with Pennsylvania State University Altoona  and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), to establish Tracks to the Future: Railroad Transportation and Engineering, a summer program for high school students. Phase I of this program was offered in the summer of 2022 at Michigan Tech, Penn State Altoona, and UIUC. In Phase II, the program expanded to three additional universities: the University of South Carolina, University of New Mexico, and California State University, Fresno. The program included 105 students from 18 different states. Most participants were rising eleventh or twelfth grade students. Overall, the Phase II program continued the success of Phase I. Students and parents provided positive feedback for both the remote and in person activities. However, improvements can still be made in the registration process, program logistics, and travel expense reimbursement.
