Rail-themed outreach to K–12 students introduces those students to the railroad industry and can encourage them to pursue engineering and transportation education programs. This project will develop new rail-themed K–12 STEM distance learning activities, adapt current in-person activities to remote use, enhance activities with 3D printing and computer “gamification” code, and document existing online activities in a distance learning activity guidebook. This interim technical report summarizes the results of the first stage of the project that reviewed and identified potential rail-themed K–12 distance learning activities for inclusion in the guidebook and recognizes best practices in developing distance learning and self-study activities from in-person STEM activities.
