Crossing Inventory
Railroads are required to submit information to FRA about crossings through which they operate. FRA makes this information available in the U.S. DOT National Highway-Rail Crossing Inventory, which is a database of all crossings in the nation. The database includes at-grade crossings (where a highway crosses a railroad at the same grade) and grade-separated crossings (where a highway crosses over a railroad on a bridge or a railroad crosses over a highway on a bridge).
The information in the Crossing Inventory can be used for planning and implementing crossing improvement programs by state and local governments responsible for highway-rail grade crossing safety. The information also can be used by the public to learn more about local grade crossings.

Railroads and states use the Grade Crossing Inventory System (GCIS) to make updates to the data in the Crossing Inventory. Click here to access the GCIS.
