Legacy and Inactive Grant Programs
This grant program provided funding to assist with the cost of capital investments and limited planning activities necessary to support improved intercity passenger rail services.
This program provided funding for eligible capital projects within the United States to repair, replace, or rehabilitate qualified railroad assets to reduce the state of good repair backlog and improve intercity passenger rail performance.
This program provided funding for long-term high- and higher-speed passenger transport needs in key corridors throughout the country.
FRA and the Federal Transit Administration provided FY 2017 Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act funding for the installation of PTC systems to accelerate implementation, increase interoperability, and improve rail reliability and safety through the prevention of train collisions and derailments.
PTC Systems Grants under the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program (FY 2018)
PTC Systems Grants provided funding for the deployment of PTC system technology for intercity passenger rail transportation, freight rail transportation, and/or commuter rail passenger transportation.
This program provided funding for local rail line relocation and improvement projects to mitigate the adverse effects of rail traffic on safety, motor vehicle traffic flow, community quality of life, or economic development.
This program provided funding for necessary expenses to repair and rehabilitate Class II and Class III railroad infrastructure damaged by hurricanes, floods, and other natural disasters in presidentially declared major disaster areas.
Railroad Safety Grants for the Safe Transportation of Energy Products by Rail Grant Program (FY 2015)
This program provided funding for public and private railroad grade crossing and track enhancement projects to improve safety on rail routes that transport flammable energy products.
This program provided funding for projects involving improvements to railroad infrastructure to increase safety at railroad crossings, train stations, rail yards, overpasses, and tracks across the country.
This program provided funding for projects that implemented a PTC system or benefited overall PTC system implementation on freight, intercity passenger, and commuter railroads.
This program provided funding for enforcing railroad-specific laws to reduce rail trespassing incidents and casualties, particularly in areas near railroad trespass hot spots. In FY 2021, this program was incorporated into the CRISI Grant Program as a set aside.
This program provided funding for targeted outreach campaigns to reduce the number of railroad-related suicides that involve railroad trespassing.
