Train Energy and Dynamics Simulator (TEDS)

Opportunity/Problem:

There is a need to develop analytical capabilities to simulate longitudinal dynamics and train operations to support FRA’s mission of railroad safety improvement and compliance of operating rules. The analytical tool is to provide capabilities of simulation of conventional train equipment, emerging technologies, such as electrically controlled pneumatic (ECP) brakes, articulated and double stack cars, and distributed and remote power. The tool should also provide simulation of long route operations to evaluate energy consumption, ride quality assessment and network level impact of new equipment introduction.

Description:

TEDS is a computer program used to conduct longitudinal train dynamics simulations in an effort to assist in the development of guidelines and recommendations to improve train operation safety. It is also capable of simulating train handling, head-end and distributed power, train makeup, ECP and automatic brake applications for speed control, stopping distances, and emergency stops.

Objective(s):

  • Develop a computer program capable of performing longitudinal train dynamics simulations in an effort to assist in the development of guidelines and recommendations to improve train operation safety

Rail Impact:

TEDS facilitates the identification and quantification of improper train operations affected by:

  • Equipment,
  • Train makeup,
  • Train handling,
  • Track conditions,
  • Operating practices and,
  • Environmental conditions
